Our great Batman voice actor, Kevin Conroy, passed away yesterday, which is really tragic news. Despite his long-standing illness, he spent a lot of time at the conventions, much to the satisfaction of all of his supporters. He will be sorely mourned by his millions of supporters throughout the world as well as by the show’s characters.
The images below show Kevin with Robin actor Loren Lester and myself with Tara Strong, who makes appearances in later Batman animated episodes. And finally, a photo of Kevin and me doing our panels in front of the sizable crowds we used to pull. Peace be with you, buddy.
It is unknown when Kevin Conroy was diagnosed with cancer, but according to his representatives, he passed away following a brief battle.
Internet users honor Kevin Conroy
Over the years, fans of comic books have come to recognize Batman as portrayed by Kevin Conroy. When news of his passing spread, Twitter was flooded with condolences.
Conroy, who was born on November 30, 1955, enrolled on a scholarship in the theater program at the Juilliard School in 1973 and earned his degree there in 1978. In the play Deathtrap by Ira Levin, he then appeared with John Houseman’s acting group, The Acting Company, on a national tour.
In 1980, Kevin moved to California and was offered a recurring role in the daytime soap opera Another World. Later, he made appearances in both contemporary and traditional theatrical productions, including plays like Hamlet.
He made a comeback to television in 1985 with the TV movie Covenant and went on to appear in several shows, including Dynasty, Ohara, Tour of Duty, Cheers, Search for Tomorrow, Matlock, and others.
He became well-known for providing Batman’s voice in the 1992 animated television series Batman: The Animated Series. In later episodes and movies including The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, Conroy continued to portray the DC character.
After the events on September 11, 2001, in New York City, he assisted with relief efforts by preparing meals for police officers and firefighters. He made a comeback to the Arkham universe as Batman in Batman: Arkham Knight in March 2014.
Kevin additionally made an appearance in Tim Daly’s online series, portraying Batman in a conflict with Daly playing Superman. Later, he made an appearance as Bruce Wayne from Earth-99 in a Batwoman episode.
This year, Conroy, an openly gay novelist, published the acclaimed book Finding Batman, which detailed his experiences as a gay man. The story was included in the yearly LGBTQIA+-themed anthology from DC Comics. Trisha Conroy and Tom Conroy, in addition to Conroy’s wife Vaughn C. Williams, are his sister and brother.
