Lance Blanks, a former NBA player and executive who later became an ESPN commentator, passed suddenly on May 3 at his home in Dallas. He had 56 years of age.
Lance has devoted his entire existence to basketball. Before transferring to the University of Texas, he played college basketball at the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the high-scoring Texas guard triumvirate “BMW”, also known as (Lance) Blanks, (Travis) Mays, and (Joey) Wright.
Together, they led the 1990 Longhorns to the Elite Eight as one of the most entertaining teams in the country. 2007 saw Lance’s induction into the Texas Longhorns Hall of Honor.
The legendary basketball player from the University of Texas was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the 26th overall selection in the 1990 NBA Draft. He spent three years in the NBA, followed by seven years as a professional player in Europe.
Lance served as Scout for the San Antonio Spurs, Assistant General Manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers, General Manager for the Phoenix Suns, and most recently as Scout for the Los Angeles Clippers following his playing career.

Lance, who was regarded as a mentor by numerous children, athletes, and executives, invested time off the court in the success of others.
He served as a consultant in nearly every aspect of life and blazed innumerable new paths, always with a strong commitment to fostering the growth of future generations.
Lance spent many years with Basketball Without Borders in Africa, South America, and Europe, investing in athletes with a passion for the sport from underserved communities. In addition, he was a member of the Nigerian National Team at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Sidney “Sugar Bear” Blanks Sr., a former NFL running back for the Houston Oilers and New England Patriots, predeceased Lance Blanks. Blanks Sr. was the first African-American in Texas to receive a football scholarship.
To honor his father’s legacy, Lance invested significantly in real estate projects, community affairs, and business in Del Rio, Texas, his father’s hometown.

As an entrepreneur and author, Lance established Sugar Bear Estates in 2020 to serve as a pillar of the Del Rio community and to honor his family’s legacy.
Lance is survived by his mother Clarice, his sibling Sidney Jr., his daughters Riley and Bryn, and his granddaughter Isabel. Lance was a devoted son, father, and friend.
His warm smile, calm demeanor, and witty quips left an impression on all who knew or met him. Lance’s kind and compassionate spirit will be sorely mourned by all.
