From An Ashkenazi Jewish Family, Sandi Graham
Graham was born in a Jewish-Canadian household (of Ashkenazi descent) on January 28, 1960. On Thanksgiving Day in 2012, her mother Evelyn Sher passed away.
Drake, Sandi’s son, was very close to her. The Degrassi actor has spoken about how she helped raise him and praised her as an inspiration on numerous occasions. Even some of his tracks, such Look What I’ve Done from 2011 contain voicemails from her.
In Toronto, Canada, Sandi’s son named a sports and entertainment club after her and called it the SherClub as an homage to her. Sandi had lost a sibling in 2011 a year earlier.
Throughout most of her son’s early years, Graham worked as an English teacher. She occasionally worked as a florist as well. According to Drake, Rueben Sher, her father, was a huge sports fan.
Dennis and Sandi met while both were employees at the same pub. Dennis, her ex-husband, is a devout Catholic from Memphis, Tennessee, and a former drummer.
Graham’s ex-husband is from a Memphis musical family and at one point played drums for Jerry Lee Lewis, a pioneer of rock and roll. In the 1980s, he moved to Toronto and eventually ran again Sandi at Club Bluenote, another establishment where he worked.
Drake was just five years old when they ultimately got divorced. Drake stated in an interview that the main cause of his split from Sandi was his father’s early career.
Drake was given sole custody by Ms. Graham following the divorce. After that, the mother-son team stayed in Toronto while Dennis returned to Memphis. The majority of Graham’s son’s upbringing took place in Toronto’s working-class Weston Road neighborhood.
Later, when Drake was in the sixth grade, his mother, who was then 61 years old, followed him to Forest Hill, a more affluent area of the city.
Although they are not married, Drake’s parents get along. Dennis even paid a heartfelt homage to Sandi on her birthday in 2021. Drake’s father wrote on his Instagram to wish his ex-wife a happy birthday:
When Drake’s son won Artist of the Decade at the Billboard Music Awards in May 2021, his parents were also present.
Drake doesn’t think twice about honoring his mum in the lyrics, music, or social media posts. In a few of his tracks, the Hotline Bling artist has referred to his mother, Sandi. In some of his musical compositions, he has talked extensively about her and their familial predicament.
Successful, Must Hate Money, Look What You’ve Done, You & The 6, and From Time, to name a few, are tracks where Drake goes personal. In reality, in February 2013, the 34-year-old rapper gave mum Sandi Graham the Grammy for Best Rap Album he had won for, Take Care.
