If We Ever Broke Up by Mae Stephens had more than 11 million views on the social networking platform. A musician who went viral on TikTok while working at a supermarket describes reaching the top 20 of the Official Singles Chart as a “shock.”
Now contracted to EMI records, the 19-year-old from Kettering is working on more tracks. She described being on the charts as “simply amazing.”
Her song of Stephens went viral on the video-sharing website TikTok when a clip of it was released on December 31.
If We Ever Broke Up debuted at number 45 on the Official Singles Chart two weeks ago but has now soared to number 20 on the most recent chart released on Friday.
“Music is my treatment”
The singer, who has been writing since she was 12 years old, formerly worked as a shift worker in a local grocery store but has since quit focusing on her music full-time.
She stated,
“Sincerity be damned, I still cannot believe everything that has occurred to me.”
“I am extremely fortunate to have this in my life and to be a musician.”
It is so unreal that I feel like I’m in a dream.
Mae Stephens stated that she was in the process of obtaining a music video and planning live performances for the song.
She continued,
“My entire family is still in shock, and I am still their little girl.”
The singer stated that although her life had become extremely hectic, she was still able to spend time with her family and partner, whom she referred to as “amazing” and “quite supportive.”
