Everything You Need to Know About Melinda Snyder’s Murder

Melinda Snyder’s murder devastated her family after Edward Cronell raped their daughter in 1990. Unfortunately, there was no Obituary for her death since her family has been cautious about the subject since then.

Melinda’s roommate heard an odd noise, a gunshot, and a vehicle driving away early that morning. She dialed 911 quickly. When the police came, they discovered the young woman in her bed bleeding. She was rushed to the nearby Piedmont Medical Center, but it was too late; the assistant had died from her injuries after being hit directly in the skull.

As if that weren’t enough, according to government documentation, Melinda was sexually molested before her attacker discharged the pistol, making her death an obvious, cold-blooded homicide. Early investigations were complicated since there was no traditional evidence at the crime scene, such as guns or fingerprints, leaving detectives with nothing except the offender’s sperm.

This was a difficulty since DNA technology was not as advanced in 1990, but it was also the year when the previously stated automobile became a critical component. After all, a few witnesses said the automobile looked like Edward “Ed” Cronell’s, a local real estate agent.

He gained access to the House because he was the broker for the company from whom Melinda was renting a room. Although it does not appear that this individual was ever formally considered a suspect, the former beauty queen had recently split up with her long-term boyfriend and had intended to visit her parents in the United States.

In truth, the police swiftly devised the notion that Ed had picked Melinda as the object of his sexual wants and had purposely waited until the middle of the night to avoid detection.

What became of Edward Cronell?

Ed was not arrested or charged with the crime until the South Carolina Supreme Court made a landmark judgment in 1993, ordering him to produce a DNA sample in response to his denial. It was a “landmark” case because it was the first in the state to obtain fluid samples from a suspect for examination prior to taking any further action.

When the second test found a match, it was obvious that Ed was to blame for Melinda’s tragic death. As a result, he was charged with murder, first-degree burglary, and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.

Cornell was found guilty on all three counts after a jury trial in 1994 and sentenced to two life terms plus an extra 30 years for the sex offense.
