The 46-year-old Scandal actress informed her parents that she would be a guest on Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s PBS series Finding Your Roots, which uses DNA testing to educate famous people about their ancestry.

“Mixed-race background and from Jamaica, so she is partly English and Scottish and Native American, but also descended from enslaved Africans in the Caribbean,” Washington said of her mother.
