The pop sensation was discovered unresponsive in his Gangnam apartment on Wednesday evening. Moonbin, a member of the boy band Astro, has passed away at the age of 25, as announced by his record label Fantagio on Thursday.

Local media, citing the police, reported that Moonbin had been discovered unresponsive in his Gangnam neighborhood condominium on Wednesday evening.

“On April 19, Astro member Moon Bin unexpectedly left our world and became a star in the sky,” Fantagio’s official Twitter account posted in Korean early Thursday morning.

It provided no information regarding the cause of the demise.

The statement requested that everyone “refrain from speculative and malicious reports” so that his family could pay respects in private.

Moon Bin, who performed under the stage name Moonbin, was a member of the group Astro and a member of the subgroup Moonbin & Sanha.

He joined the Fantagio label’s trainee program at a young age and was an actor and model prior to his February 2016 début with Astro. The group originally consisted of six performers, but in February 2023, one member departed.

Moon Sua, the sister of Moonbin, is also a K-pop singer and a member of the female group Billie.

“My deepest condolences on the passing of one of the most beautiful beings I’ve ever met through music! Prayers to his family, friends, employers, and admirers!” tweeted one Twitter user in response to Fantagio’s post.

In recent years, several other youthful K-pop stars have died, including Goo Hara in November 2019. She had been abused by an ex-boyfriend who, following their breakup, blackmailed her with sex recordings.

The suspected suicide occurred one month after her close companion and fellow K-pop star Sulli committed suicide after a long battle with online bullying, prompting calls in South Korea for harsher penalties for cybercrimes and abusive online comments.

Minwoo, a 33-year-old member of the boy band 100%, perished at home in 2018, with his label stating only that he suffered cardiac arrest.

Just over three months prior, SHINee’s main singer Jonghyun was believed to have committed suicide. He was 27.

K-pop artists are recruited by talent agencies at a young age — typically in their early or mid-teens — and live under strict supervision, with their days dominated by rigorous musical and dance training.

According to recent government statistics, South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the globe, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death for those under 40.
