Motsi Mabuse, a Strictly Come Dancing judge, has stated that she fails to comprehend northern English accents. Mabuse, who speaks five languages, said that she must “really concentrate” when conversing in the United Kingdom.
She noted that when an accent is “extremely heavy,” colleague Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood helps translate.
Mabuse was born in South Africa but currently resides in Germany.
The 41-year-old actor stated to comedians Ed Gamble and James Acaster on their Off Menu podcast,
“The issue is, you [Britons] all talk differently.
“Every time I’m in the country, I have to really focus.
“Some folks I simply do not know… I’m just like, ‘Are we speaking the same language?’
There are numerous accents here. Afterward, Mabuse was questioned if she had difficulty understanding participant AJ Odudu’s Blackburn accent during series 19 of the dance reality show in 2021.
“Yes! Yes, yes, yes. Nonetheless, there have been numerous folks from the north, so I am always asking Craig. I’m merely attempting to comprehend… but it is not simple.”
She stated that colleague judge Craig Revel Horwood serves as her interpreter while interacting with folks from northern England.
“I struggle tremendously with individuals from the north.
“I’m like, could you please interpret this? It is so powerful that I simply cannot comprehend it. I’m being honest.”
Mabuse is proficient in five languages, including English, German, and three South African dialects, including Afrikaans and Setswana.
She stated that she frequently speaks German inadvertently during broadcasts: “It’s happened fairly frequently.
In addition, I have a South African accent, so it’s a jumble. It is a total mess.”
Mabuse resides in Germany and has appeared on Let’s Dance, the German version of Strictly Come Dancing.
As the dance competition airs on BBC One in the fall and winter, she makes a weekly trip to the United Kingdom for the live shows.
She became a judge on Strictly in 2019, joining Head Judge Shirley Ballas, Revel Horwood, and Anton Du Beke.
