Pilot Alain C, 64, was tried in France for manslaughter when he murdered skydiver Nicolas Galy, 40, by cutting his head with the aircraft’s left wing and strut.
Galy, a seasoned skydiver with 226 jumps under his belt, made a mistake that led to the unusual incident, according to the pilot.
Mr. Galy “did not follow the expected course and should never have been on that course,” according to Alain C.

Nicolas Galy said that he had nothing to do with it. He thought his flight route made sense. Though he is not at fault, his life has been terrible.
Prosecutor Jeanne Regagnon, nevertheless, insisted that Galy was right. “Only the victim followed the rules without any carelessness,” she said.
After spending around 20 seconds leaping out of the aircraft with another skydiver, Galy passed away in July 2018.
They were flying at over 4,400 meters above Bouloc-en-Quercy, which is located in the south of France, to the north of Toulouse.
Following the free fall, Galy and the second skydiver began gliding as the aircraft dropped after the jump. The aircraft hit Galy, and his body descended onto the field via the parachute.

Nicolas Galy, 40, was among the 10 parachutists and two passengers who jumped out of the plane over Bouloc-en-Quercy, close to Toulouse, in 2018. He was dressed in a stylish wingsuit.
The leap happened at a height of around 14,000 feet.
But after only 20 seconds, he slammed into the plane’s wing, cutting his head off his shoulders and killing him instantly. His exhilarating flight came to a violent end.
The pilot, who was only named as 64-year-old Alain C. in French media, was convicted guilty of involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday and was given a suspended sentence by a Montauban criminal court.
The Midi-Pyrénées Skydiving School Association, which was fined twenty thousand euros, hired Alain. The French media reported that the penalties were postponed in part.
The pilot said that because he had not spotted the wingsuiters, he had felt he was safe. “Compared to parachutists who are in free fall, it’s more complicated with wingsuit riders who move more in a straight line,” he said.
“They can interfere with the aircraft and don’t descend very much.”
Wingsuit diving restrictions were tightened as a result of the event. In November, the court judgment will be made public.
