When Willie O’Ree, the first black player in the NHL, hit Nesterenko with his stick after knocking out both of his front teeth and making racial slurs, Nesterenko notoriously needed 15 stitches.
He was interviewed for Studs Terkel’s best-selling book Working: What People Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do toward the end of his NHL career. At the age of 88, Eric Nesterenko passed away on June 6, 2022. His cause of death has not yet been made public.

Nikita Nesterenko led his team to an undefeated regular season last year with 30 goals and 20 assists. He will compete for the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League in 2019–20 before transferring to Brown University in 2020–21. Nesterenko enjoys skating aggressively and has outstanding handles and vision.
He thinks his play is comparable to that of Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov and that one of his strengths is the ability to make quick decisions. It was believed that he was an excellent forward who needed to put on weight and fill out his physique when he was drafted out of the prep school Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
The 21-year-old athlete thinks that in order to advance in the game, he must focus on his strength, which he can develop by working out both on and off the ice, mastering corner bouts and simply being a bigger, stronger player. Nesterenko’s desire to advance his career and, hopefully, wear the Wild insignia one day, shouldn’t surprise anyone.
