As a result of the success of the Apollo 11 mission, space-age fashion was born in the 1960s. Paco Rabanne was recognized for pioneering the fashion genre known for its distinctive materials. The style was popularized by Andre Courreges, the first fashion designer.
Courreges used PVC pipes and plastic to create moon boots, short and straight skirts, and extraterrestrial-inspired eyewear. The Cosmos collection, which included light bulb-shaped wool gowns, feathery headgear, and circular ruby-red raincoats, was also introduced by Pierre Cardin.
In 2010, Cardin told the New York Times that he wanted to create something relevant to the future and see women live without boundaries.
Emilio Pucci then debuted a collection for flight attendants that included astronaut-style helmets and cotton jackets. Paco Rabanne designed a similar look for Jane Fonda in the science fiction film Barbarella. The design has also appeared in TV shows such as Star Trek and The Jetsons.
Paco Rabanne was famous for his one-of-a-kind designs.
Paco Rabanne, born on February 18, 1934, founded his fashion label in 1966 and was well-known for the materials he used in his designs. He was known for his futuristic garments made of hammered metal, paper, and even malleable polymers.
Following his collaboration with fragrance manufacturer Puig in 1968, he launched XS in 1994. His first drawing exhibition opened in 2005, with proceeds benefiting women’s health in Beslan.
Rabanne made a few strange comments on television that the general public found strange because they were related to the paranormal. He previously claimed to have had a close relationship with Jesus Christ as well as encounters with God and extraterrestrial creatures.
He went on to make similar claims, for which he was severely chastised. Rabanne also authored the book Has the Countdown Begun? From the darkness to the light.
