The School for Good and Evil, which would be released the following week, was directed by Paul Feig. One of Hollywood’s top directors believes that Northern Ireland’s film industry needs more studios to expand.
The action adventure with an all-star ensemble was filmed in Northern Ireland, including at Harbour Studios in Belfast.
It is based on Soman Chainani’s books, which describe a school where kids are taught how to play the good guys and bad guys in fairy tales.
To draw in more major productions, Feig told BBC News NI that Northern Ireland required more “stage space.”
It’s a catch-22 situation, he continued, because more goods must arrive before extra production space and sound stages can be constructed.
But there’s no doubt that you could need more sound stages. Belfast Harbour Studios is lovely, however, there could have been another stage there because there are two enormous stages there.
He claimed that “so much product because it used to be all just movie studios but now it’s the streamers” was the industry’s problem.
In London, Budapest, and other cities, several studios have been occupied by streamers.
“If you can establish yourself as the city with the most stage space, the best crews, and a nice working environment, it will attract more visitors.”
Soon, Northern Ireland will serve as the location for the TV series Blade Runner 2099, which is based on the renowned Blade Runner movies.
The TV, film, and video gaming industries will thrive thanks to a new four-year strategy from Northern Ireland Screen.
Feig began his career as an actor before transitioning into a hugely successful director and producer.
Hit movies including Bridesmaids and Last Christmas, as well as episodes of the TV shows Nurse Jackie, 30 Rock, and Mad Men, are among the movies he has directed.
Netflix’s first significant production in Northern Ireland, The School for Good and Evil, was shot there in 2021.
Feig described the cast as having “some serious hitters”
Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, and Cate Blanchett are among those mentioned.
And then there are a ton of incredible newcomers, like Kit Young, Jamie Flatters, Sophia Wylie, and Anne Caruso, according to Feig.
When the two generations play together, it’s enjoyable to watch them if they are both talented and actual professionals.
In addition to Belfast’s Harbour Studios, The School for Good and Evil was also filmed at St. Anne’s Cathedral, Mount Stewart in County Down, and Big Dog Forest in County Fermanagh.
Even though the movie features amazing special effects, Feig insisted that shooting on-site was essential.
What he stated was, “I never want to get sucked into a special effects-driven maelstrom, where you’re in front of green screens and actors are acting with tennis balls and all that stuff.”
“We attempted to do as much as we could practice for this film.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Mount Stewart, which was fantastic because we used it for several of the outdoor grounds.
“That was fantastic. We have a complete scenario around that lovely pond out there.
Then, we were filming in Big Dog Forest, a remote area of the woods.
“So far, most of them have stated that logistically we probably couldn’t even accomplish it, but it’s so beautiful.
“It’s just so amazing that most moviegoers would say, ‘That’s a special effect,'” the author said.
“No, that’s how the actual forest looks, not like that.” The movie also makes frequent appearances in St. Anne’s Cathedral.
Feig remembered, “It was so magnificent that they let us take it over.”
Even though it was a large, nearly sound-stage-like space, we spent a good two weeks there and completely altered the space.
“Choosing a spouse”
Feig, though, thinks that directing a significant production is a time-consuming job.
I always joke that choosing a project is like choosing a spouse because you’ll be thinking about it constantly for the next 24 hours, seven days a week.
You must be passionate about the project you’re working on because it’s what you obsess over.
“Let’s just say that these huge ones are logistical issues.”
Feig is eager to return to Belfast to film more because he did so in 2021 when the lockdown was ending.
The town only started to open up again in the last few weeks, he claimed.
“I’m hoping to make another movie here, and after that, I’ll just be out partying every night,” he said.
Starting on October 19th, The School for Good and Evil will be available on Netflix.
