The Royle Family actor Peter Martin, who passed away at the age of 82, has been showered with tributes. Peter, who portrayed Jim and Barbara Royle’s neighbor Joe Carroll in the Manchester sitcom for fourteen years, also portrayed Len Reynolds in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale from 2001 to 2007 and appeared in five distinct roles on Coronation Street.
The news was corroborated by Facebook tributes from friends. Dave Shann penned,
“My friend, drinking companion, and fishing buddy passed away on Wednesday morning, very sad, many of you will recognize him from television, R.I.P. Peter Martin, we had great laughs together”
Paul Willam Sykes expressed his condolences to his family and acquaintances. It was a pleasure to share some amusement with you, Peter. Melanie Moorhouse, who was also among those paying tribute, remarked,
“What a gentleman he was.”
With his affable and retiring personality Joe was the spouse of Mary and the father of Cheryl. Jim and his son Antony frequently make fun of Joe. After a few drinks, he emerged from his shell and revealed his aptitude as a singer.
Peter portrayed Joe from 1998 to 2012, in addition to starring in Brassed Off, All Creatures Great and Small, Chucklevision, Coronation Street, the Kay Mellor series Playing the Field, Victoria Wood, and Last of the Summer Wine.
His other roles included the proprietor of a fish and chip shop in First of the Summer Wine and ‘Charlie the moonlighting gravedigger’ in the Beiderbecke Tapes.
In 2018, he co-starred with Stephen Graham in the comedy film Walk Like a Panther, about a group of 1980s wrestlers who are forced to don lycra once more when their cherished local pub is threatened with closure.
In Corrie, he portrayed Jack Livesey, a contestant in the Superbrain competition held at the Rovers Return in 1977, and a father in the hospital anxiously anticipating the birth of his seventeenth child, whereas Ray Langton was anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child, Tracy Barlow, in 1977.
He also portrayed lorry driver Clarkie, a patron at Jim’s Cafe in 1980, a gasboard man who investigated a breach at number 9 Coronation Street in 1987, and dog handler Jim Buckley in 1990.
