Petra Hansson was an executive at Spotify and a prominent lawyer. She spent nearly ten years working for the music streaming service, and because of her expertise, she assisted them in hitting several significant milestones.
Nothing was known about Petra Hansson previous to her collaboration with Spotify, as depicted in the film The Playlist
Hansson is introduced in Episode 3 of the Netflix miniseries The Legal as a rising attorney in a sizable Scandinavian legal company.
The largest corporation in the Swedish legal market, Mannheimer Swartling, had a promising employee named Petra Hansson. Hansson was in high demand a year before Spotify launched, and she eventually joined them as their agent and legal advisor.
She then served as the streaming service’s representative in meetings with major record labels and businesses, as was appropriately portrayed in The Playlist. Hansson accompanied Niklas Ivarsson in all legal concerns, but she also came up with a solution that helped Spotify expand.
Daniel Ek, the man behind Spotify, was tempted to make the service available to everyone for free, but Hansson was able to spot the flaws. She eventually came up with a plan that ensured long-term success. Petra Hansson played a key role in the development of the ad-free concept that became known as Spotify Premium, as artfully depicted in The Playlist.
She also contributed significantly to Spotify’s success on a global scale by working with other legal professionals to support its establishment in the US. To make Warner Music Group’s entire music library available on Spotify in Europe, Hansson and Edgar Bronfman Jr., the company’s then-CEO, reached a deal in 2009.
How did Petra Hansson fare?
She is solely followed by The Playlist till Spotify was introduced. But as time went on, her relationship with the company deepened, and she held positions ranging from general counsel to head of business affairs.
In 2017, Hansson and Spotify officially called it quits on their ten-year union. She worked as a consultant and investor for several businesses and non-profits after she left.
In February 2019, Hansson and Niklas Ivarsson, the former global head of licensing for Spotify, joined the advisory board of Tracklib, a Stockholm-based sample licensing company. Pär Almqvist, CEO of Tracklib, complimented her for helping the company in 2020 with its legal and business challenges.
Since then, Petra Hansson has been able to maintain her secrecy, and little is known about her activities after leaving Tracklib. Although her exact location is unknown, it is assumed that she resides in Sweden’s Greater Stockholm Metropolitan Area. She doesn’t use any social media platforms.
