R. Kelly finally received the prison term many believed he deserved after years of dealing with charges of sexual assault: a federal court sentenced the disgraced singer to 30 years in prison.
The prosecution requested that Kelly serve more than 25 years in prison to “protect the public,” and the judge agreed. One victim remarked,
“I stand here very proud of my justice system, very proud of my fellow survivors, and quite delighted with the outcome.
“He did this for thirty years, and he received thirty years as a result.”
Although Kelly claimed to have a strong relationship with his mother, it soured once he rose to fame.

Robert Sylvester Kelly was born on January 8, 1987, to Joanne Kelly, a teacher, and devoted Baptist, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Kelly’s father, whose name is unknown, was missing from his life.
Joanne wed Robert’s stepfather, Lucious, when Robert was about five years old. The family resided in the Ida B. Wells Homes public housing complex in Chicago. Kelly claimed to have a close relationship with his mother and that she had even proposed to him, according to GQ. He stated:

In Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly, DeRogatis said that the singer abandoned his mother after becoming well-known. The reporter wrote:
“Several individuals told me that Kelly avoided his mother, whom he professes to have worshipped after his career took off. She checked into the office using a fictitious name, and despite having the money, he refused to pay her medical bills.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, R Kelly cooked up a story about being shot by a gang in his early teens, which Joanne revealed to an “associate” on her deathbed. Joanne asserted that Robert made a suicide attempt.
When Robert’s mother left her to babysit, his sister is accused of abusing him sexually. In his 2012 memoir Soulacoaster, Kelly wrote of experiencing sexual abuse at the hands of a family member. Robert claimed that a woman toying with him roused him from his slumber.
The woman was mentioned in the book but went unnamed despite being a frequent visitor to the home.

When R Kelly compared sexual assault to a hereditary curse, Chris Heath of GQ was startled. Kelly told Heath that because his sister had mistreated him, he had been cursed to mistreat others. Robert disputed it, claiming he had broken the chain.
“Well, you know, much like poverty was a curse that ran down my family generations as well, but I decided to break that curse. A “generational curse” does not preclude its reversal.
Robert didn’t end the curse, it was discovered afterward. Carey thinks that R. Kelly’s story would have taken a very different turn without Theresa. Carey informed DeRogatis that “Theresa is the cause of everything happening in the way that it happened.”
“Kelly was hypersexual, not because he chose to be, but because of his sister,” Kelly’s old manager continued.
After his mother, R. Kelly gave his daughter the name Joanne Kelly. R. Kelly may have given his daughter Joanne Kelly’s name in honor of his mother. When R. Kelly’s life started to fall apart, Joanne came.
Robert came under heavy fire for marrying Aaliyah while she was a minor when Joanne was a little girl. Later, R Kelly was charged with and found not guilty of child pornography, but she was still accused of sexual assault.

Abi received requests from online users to criticize her father after Lifetime’s release of Surviving R. Kelly. Through Instagram, Buku clarified that she was no longer friends with Robert and was still digesting things. She penned:
Reminders of how awful my father is and how we should speak out against him, insulting remarks about my family, making up things about me, my siblings, and our mothers’ ‘part,’ etc. do not aid my family’s recovery process.
“My father is the same monster you’re all bringing up with me. I know exactly who he is and what he does. In that home, I was raised.
