According to numerous Spanish media outlets, Rafael Nadal and his wife Mery Perelló welcomed their first child—a baby boy—on October 8. The couple gave birth to a son on the island of Mallorca, according to a Saturday story in the Diario de Mallorca. The tennis player previously announced in June that he and his wife were expecting their first child.

When asked what will change in his life after becoming a father, the 22-time Grand Slam winner said that he doesn’t know, but he insisted that there won’t be any professional adjustments, during a press conference in June.

When he spoke to The Sun in the past, Nadal had mentioned his love of kids and his desire to establish a family “I want to have both boys and girls as children. I am a family-oriented individual who enjoys spending time with kids. I think that caring for the kids comes first and foremost.”

A word of congratulations from Novak Djokovic

While Nadal hasn’t formally announced the good news with a statement or published a social media post about his baby boy, his tennis rival Novak Djokovic just learned of the joyful development at a media appearance and the fellow competitor extended heartfelt congratulations.

While competing in the Astana Open in Kazakhstan, Djokovic was notified of the news. In response, he stated, “Congrats! I had no idea. Really? It’s wonderful news. I send health and happiness to his wife and the infant.”

After 14 years of dating, the new parents got married in October 2019. Nadal has acknowledged that he prefers to maintain a low profile in his personal life because his professional life puts him in the public eye.

The couple is well known for keeping their relationship discreet. Weeks after his poignant final battle against lifelong friend and foe Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal received the happy baby news. At Federer’s farewell match, images and videos of Nadal sobbing for him went viral on social media and were acclaimed as the greatest sporting moment by both fans and other athletes.
