The Avengers: Endgame actor was brutally honest about being “hypersexualized” and “pigeonholed” early in her career, feeling that it threatened her success, during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert, which was celebrating its 500th episode.

From a Young Age, Scarlett Johansson Experienced “Hypersexualization” and “Pigeonholing”

It got so bad that Scarlett Johansson began to wonder if maybe people thought she was 40 years old. Scarlett Johansson was her candid self, recalling to Dax Shepard how she felt she wasn’t getting offers for things she wanted to do because of being “objectified and pigeonholed.”

As a result, it changed from something she wanted to have to something she was battling against. Consider the movie Lost in Translation, in which Scarlett Johansson, at 17 years old, starred alongside Bill Murray as a figure five years her senior.

According to the 37-year-old actress, “I got kind of pigeonholed into this weird hypersexualized thing because I think everybody thought I was older and that I’d been [acting] for a long time. I felt like [my career] was over. It was like, “That’s the kind of career you have, these are the roles you’ve played,” and I was like, “This is it? The runway is not long on that.”

Scarlett Johansson Discusses The Slow Progress That Women Are Making in Hollywood

Scarlett Johansson compared how things are now with younger actors to how they were when she was in her twenties, saying, “Now, I see younger actors that are in their twenties. It feels like they’re allowed to be all these different things. It’s another time. We’re not even allowed to pigeonhole other actors anymore, thankfully, right? People are much more dynamic.”

The #MeToo Movement opened up discussions about the importance of making women’s safety in the industry a major priority and stopping males in positions of authority from abusing young actresses. Scarlett Johansson thinks there needs to be more done, though.

Scarlett stated that even though the “600 males” may not be as overtly aggressive as they were a moment ago, we “live in patriarchy” and that there is “a fundamental reality of the condition of the woman that will always, it’s still fundamentally there.” Given how deeply ingrained patriarchy is in both our culture and society, Scarlett finds it difficult to “see it ever being not an element.”

Although progress is slow-moving, Scarlett Johansson sees how it is propelling Hollywood and beyond forward: “I’ve come to this realization that it’s important to understand progress and change when it’s really meaningful — it takes two steps forward and two steps back, and then it gets better and then it gets worse. It’s not finite. I think if you don’t leave room for people to figure it out, then the actual progressive change doesn’t reappear.

Scarlett Johansson has unquestionably made a name for herself in the competitive world of Hollywood with several outstanding performances that have received critical acclaim as well as widespread popularity. Scarlett has always nailed every and every part that has come her brilliant way, whether it be as a bankable MCU star or choosing to see more Indie-er movies!
