American politician and former National Football League (NFL) running back Herschel Junior Walker played for 12 seasons.
He ran as a Republican for the Georgia U.S. Senate in 2022, but Raphael Warnock, the incumbent Democrat, beat him.
Walker earned the Heisman Trophy as a junior while playing football for the University of Georgia, where Herschel also competed.
He played for the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL) for the first three years of his professional career, and in 1985, the league’s last year, he was awarded MVP.
Walker joined the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys from 1987 to 1988 after the USFL was dissolved.
Herschel received second-team All-Pro and back-to-back Pro Bowl accolades. Walker was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1989, a move widely viewed as one of the most unfair in NFL history and one that many believe helped pave the way for the Cowboys’ success in the 1990s.
Before retiring with the Cowboys after the 1997 season, he played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants.
Walker was honored by the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Walker was a member of the 1992 Winter Olympics’ American bobsleigh squad. In 2002, he founded a business to market chicken products.
