Richard Belzer, a well-known comedian, actor, and novelist died at the age of 78 on February 19, 2023. While the cause of death has yet to be determined, his friend Bill Scheft stated that he had a number of health issues, including circulatory and pulmonary issues.

The official Facebook page of the NBC show Law & Order, in which Belzer also appeared, paid tribute to him by posting a photo of him and noting that everyone who watched Homicide or Law & Order: Special Victims Unit was well aware of Belzer’s flawless performance. The message continued:

“His skill, abilities, and devotion to the trade made him a cornerstone in the business, but it was his humor, compassion, and loving heart that made him family. Our hearts go out to his loved ones as we mourn his passing while also celebrating his memory.”

Richard was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1983, according to Heavy, but he survived. Belzer discovered he had cancer while swimming one day, according to The Washington Post. At the time, he was 40 years old.

He stated in an interview with The Washington Post that he was looking for a solution to the same problem. According to Opoyi, the actor had to wear dark glasses because his eyes were light-sensitive. According to an official item on the website of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago:

Richard Belzer began his career as a stand-up comedian and rose to fame after appearing on Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980. He then made his film debut in the 1970s with the indie comedy film The Groove Tube, which he directed.

More films followed, including Fame, Café Flesh, Night Shift, The Wrong Guys, The Big Picture, The Bonfire of the Vanities, The Puppet Masters, Species II, The Comedian, and others. Belzer appeared as Joe Kline in one episode of the children’s television show Sesame Street and ten episodes of the CBS television series The Flash. Belzer rose to prominence as detective John Munch in 122 episodes of the NBC cop drama series Homicide: Life on the Street.

Later, on NBC, he played John Munch in 325 episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also appeared in Moonlighting, Miami Vice, Tattingers, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The X-Files, Mad About You, and other television shows.
