As he prepares for a performance at the Hippodrome, Sir Ian McKellen revealed that he has “always been a little afraid” of performing in Bristol.
The veteran actor co-stars with comedian John Bishop in Mother Goose through Sunday.
Prior to the opening night, he revealed that he was initially too intimidated by the reputation of Bristol’s theaters to apply for a position there.
“I believed it was well beyond my capabilities,” he said.
The Lord of the Rings and X-Men actor revealed to BBC West that he had only performed in Bristol once during his career.
“I did visit the revitalized Old Vic for my 80th birthday one-man show, but otherwise, no,” he said.
“I believe I’ve always been somewhat terrified of Bristol; I know many people who have [performed] here.”
Bristol was the best selection. He continued,
“When I graduated from college and was looking for a job, Bristol was my top choice.”
According to him, Bristol Old Vic employment was especially coveted by actors of his generation.
“It had a strong reputation, and I believe the productions ran for four weeks.
Bristol productions were always regarded as the finest because rehearsal time was limited to two weeks, whereas rehearsal time for similar productions at other companies was only two weeks.
He added,
“I don’t believe I even applied to Bristol, as I felt it was far beyond my abilities, and I instead attended Coventry.”
Ian McKellen stated that he felt a great deal of responsibility for the children in the audience when discussing Mother Goose.
“Perhaps this is the first theater they have ever seen, so there is a great responsibility to ensure their enjoyment,” he said.
“Something to look at, shout about, sing along with, and laugh about.”
Ian McKellen continued,
“The stars of any pantomime are not the actors, but the audience members. The audience is the main event.
“This is for their benefit; if they do not cheer, boo, or sing, then you have not done your job correctly.”
When asked if he would attempt any Bristol slang or dialect, he responded,
“I believe it would be impolite to attempt a local accent.” I will use my native northern intonation.”
