Christy Wegener’s film I Am Vanessa Guillen will examine how the Texan’s dream of joining the military became a reality in 2018 before being abandoned a few years later. Guillen enlisted in the Army and started his 91F, Small Arms and Artillery Repairer, training.
When E4 Specialist Aaron David Robinson savagely murdered her, she was stationed at Fort Hood (20). Guillen was brutally killed by Robinson using a hammer. He ran away from Fort Hood out of fear of being arrested and committed suicide in Killeen, Texas before law enforcement could apprehend him.
Guillen’s family demonstrated determination by pressing the issue all the way to then-US President Donald Trump, refusing to back down. He assured the grieving family that the situation will be independently reviewed.
Together with Isabel Castro, Lindsey Cordero, and Armando Croda, Wegener is co-producing the movie I Am Vanessa Guillen. Under the Story Syndicate banner, Andrea Berman collaborates as co-executive producer with executive producers Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Jon Bardin, and Nell Constantinople.
The New York-based production company Story Syndicate is known for works like the three-part Netflix documentary Eat The Rich: The GameStop Saga, the ABC-Murders prequel series Before the Marathon, the National Geographic documentary Becoming Cousteau, and the Netflix original series Britney versus Spears, among others.
Bio of Vanessa Guillen
Guillen was born on September 30, 1999, to Mexican parents Rogelio and Gloria Guillen in Houston, Texas. In June 2018, after completing her high school education at César E. Chávez, she enlisted in the Army.
Running and soccer were two sports she enjoyed playing. Reports state that Guillen told her mother Gloria that a sergeant at Fort Hood had been assaulting her sexually.
She didn’t mention his name, but she gave her mother the reassurance that she could handle things on her own. Investigators said that when Guillen spotted a picture of a woman named Cecily Anne Aguilar (22) on his phone, Robinson grew concerned. Aguilar was still married to another soldier at the time, Keon Aguilar, which worried Robinson.
Aguilar is being detained on suspicion of dismembering Guillen’s body and burying the fragments close to the Leon River, while Robinson committed suicide. A federal grand jury indicted her on July 13 of last year on 11 offenses. The first day of her trial is January 2, 2023.
