By the end of the 1950s, Berry had established himself as a successful performer, with many hit records, film appearances, and a lucrative touring career. Berry’s Club Bandstand, his own nightclub in St. Louis, had also opened. He was sentenced to three years in prison in January 1962 for breaking the Mann Act by transporting a 14-year-old girl across state lines for the purpose of having sexual intercourse.
