How did Vic Fangio start his Professional Career?
In 1975, Fangio played defensive back for Dunmore High. He served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at his high school from 1979 to 1981.
He oversaw Milford Academy’s defense in 1982. In 1984, he then joined the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars as a defensive assistant coach. From 1986 until 1994, Fangio coached the linebackers for New Orleans. He led the famed “Dome Patrol” during that time.
The Saints finished in the Top 5 in all four categories during Fangio’s nine seasons in New Orleans: overall defense (300.0 ypg, fifth), sacks (408, third), scoring defense (18.1 ppg, fourth), and takeaways (336 – T-3rd).
Fangio signed on with the Carolina Panthers in 1995. 1995 to 1998 saw Dom Capers as a coach. He assisted the squad in making it to the NFC Championship Game in his first season as the defensive coordinator. From 1999 through 2001, Sr. Fangio oversaw the defense for the Colts.
Fangio signed on with the Houston Texans in 2002. From 2002 through 2005, I was Dom Capers’ defensive coordinator in Houston. As a special assistant and defensive assistant, Fangio joined the Ravens in 2006. He worked with linebacker Ray Lewis in 2009. In addition, he served as Jim Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator for the Stanford Cardinal in 2010 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2011.
In 2011, he and Harbaugh improved the 49ers’ defense, which led to 35 errors. On January 15, 2015, the 49ers released Fangio as well after letting go of Harbaugh.
Fangio has consented to work as the Bears’ new defensive coordinator. Jan 19, 2015. After Clint Hurtt left in 2017, Fangio took over as the outside linebackers coach.
In three seasons, Fangio raised the Bears’ defense from 30th to 14th, 15th, and 10th. On January 17, the PFWA named Fangio Assistant Coach of the Year. He got the same honor from the AP at the 8th Annual NFL Honors one month later.
