The cab company FreeNow has canceled its sponsorship deal with RTÉ for The Tommy Tiernan Show in reaction to an offensive comment Tommy Tiernan made during a recent performance.
He said a joke that Emer O’Neill, another RTÉ broadcaster, deemed offensive and racist. As a result, she left one of the comedian’s Vicar Street shows.
The joke, which made reference to taxi drivers in Dublin Zoo, was addressed by the sponsor of the comedian’s Saturday night show on RTÉ, FreeNow.
According to FreeNow, it ended a significant sponsorship agreement with the actor and comedian’s RTÉ program because it was “disappointed with the sentiments made during his Vicar Street event against taxi drivers.” Yesterday, the Company made the news.
Tommy also issued a statement on the incident, which Claire Byrne read aloud earlier this week on RTÉ Radio 1.
It says, “Tommy told a joke on stage as part of his stand-up routine on Friday, January 6th.”
The next night, and every night after, he publicly apologized on stage, expressing his regret and removing the joke from the performance right away.
