Herdman began instructing football in England when he was a young child when he was still a student and a part-time lecturer at Northumbria University.
He worked as the youth academy’s development coach until 2001 when he moved to New Zealand.
After taking over as coach, he promptly led the Canadian women’s national soccer team to a gold medal triumph in the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico.
In Vancouver, Canada’s CONCACAF Olympic qualifying competition, he guided the team to victory, giving them one of the two berths available for the 2012 London Olympics, where they earned the bronze medal.

John Herdman has taken a few smacks to the teeth in recent weeks.
