On December 24, 1980, Ylan Mui was born to parents Bong Q and DanTam. Vy is her sister, while Dan is her brother.
The Mui family has ties to Vietnam. The Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital employs her father, a physician.
He married DanTam in Vietnam in the beginning of the 1970s, while she was a law student and he was still in medical school.
A few time after the birth of their eldest daughter, Vy, Ylan’s father seized the opportunity to enroll at Tulane University in New Orleans. In war-torn Vietnam, where tensions were increasing, he had left his wife and kid behind.
When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, her family relocated to New Orleans, where Ylan was reared, after losing their house.
