She was employed by the Environmental Studies Center at Arizona State University. After serving for twelve years as a professor of scientific computation at Arizona State University, she decided to devote herself full-time to writing.

In 1988, Diana planned to “practice, just to learn how” to write a novel. Diana  Gabaldondidn’t write to get money; she wrote for herself. She had always wanted to write a historical novel but lacked the training and skills to do it.

Her main male character, “James Fraser,” was inspired by a seventeen-year-old boy named Jamie McCrimmon. She used time travel to justify the female protagonist’s contemporary outlook and actions in the story.

While writing the book before the Internet/”World Wide Web” existed, she researched the ancient way of life using books. Since there was no internet database of information “like Google,” she conducted significant studies via a wide range of literature to make her novel as realistic, impactful, and genuine as possible.

On the CompuServe Literary Forum, Diana posted an excerpt from her work. The term “Cross Stitch” was given to it by literary agent “Perry Knowlton,” who was introduced to Diana by well-known novelist John E. Stith.
