Interning at KTVU in 1981 while a student at San Francisco State University, Frank Somerville later joined the station full-time.
He started his career in local radio after college, first in Santa Rosa, California, then in Minneapolis. In addition to New York City, he has also put in time in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Providence, Rhode Island. This whole ordeal took place before I even got back to the Bay Area.
In 1992, he became a co-anchor on KTVU’s early news show. Therefore, it was the first anchor for the 5 o’clock broadcast back in 2005. He eventually became a regular on the 6 and 10 o’clock newscasts as a co-anchor. This happened in 2008 after the 40-year senior Dennis Richmond was replaced.
He extended an apology on behalf of KTVU for an incident that occurred in 2013 in which racially insensitive pilot names were announced. Thus, it was announced on Asiana Airlines Flight 214.
After an incident on live in June 2021, he decided to take a leave of absence from KTVU. At the same time, he was having difficulty deciphering the scripts for several different episodes.
This caused him to talk in a slurred fashion. Finally, on August 4th, he was back in his old job as a news presenter. Unlike the last time, he didn’t explain why he had to leave for a little while this time.
