Jeremih started his career at Columbia College Chicago, where he collaborated with Mick Schultz, a music producer. “My Ride” is a song that they both contributed to. It is discovered that Willie Taylor, a member of his cousin’s Day26 group, helped him.

In 2009, he got to know Karen Kwak, executive vice president of A&R, and Russell Simmons, CEO of Def Jam. He signed a recording contract with Def Jam after working for the two. In 2009, he released his first single, “Birthday Sex,” which peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100.
