Dance 100, Netflix’s upcoming dance competition, will put seasoned performers to the ultimate test. They will be required to appear on the program in order to demonstrate their abilities, but they will also be required to compose routines for large groups.
Rudy Garcia, who at the age of 14 earned a black belt in Karate, is one of the candidates set to appear on the Netflix show. He began Karate at the age of eight and enjoyed it because it provided order and control in his life. Dance 100 will premiere on Netflix on Friday, March 17, at 3:01 a.m. ET.
Rudy Garcia had only one desire: to dance
Rudy Garcia, a Miami, Florida-born American dancer, and director, is one of eight dancers set to compete in the upcoming Netflix dance challenge. While he has always been involved in the arts and all things creative, he told Voyage MIA that he could never have imagined himself working in the artistic industry when he was younger.
During the conversation, he stated that his father enrolled him in Karate when he was eight years old, and by the age of fourteen, he was a black belt. He went on to say that the framework and discipline he received prepared him for dance.
When asked when he started performing, he replied:
“My aunt, Susie Garcia, had opened her own dance studio by 2009. “From the moment I stepped into the studio, I knew dance would be a part of my life for the rest of my life,” I said, ready to take the plunge and enroll in a dance lesson.
The Dance 100 contestant said it felt “natural” to him and that he worked hard because he knew he wanted to be the best. Rudy attended the New World School of the Arts, but he was turned down the first time he auditioned. He just wanted to dance, but he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after high school. After some deliberation, he decided to apply to New World.
During his academy tryout, however, he failed to impress the teacher because he arrived in sweats and was unaware that pantyhose was required. Three months later, however, the Dance 100 ensemble member returned and was approved. In 2017, he graduated from the institution with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. When asked about his undergraduate experience, he stated:
“Those four years were the most difficult of my life because I was in college, instructing and training at my aunt’s ballet school, and performing professionally. During that period, I had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the world’s greatest Latin acts, including Maluma, J Blavin, Daddy Yankee, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, and others.”
He has been a performer for 13 years and has studied in many genres, but he specializes in and teaches Jazz, Funk, and Contemporary. Rudy will appear in the Netflix dance series on March 17th.
