While Bird was a celebrity during his playing career, his life off the court has never been easy for the media to document or discuss. About his relationship with Dinah Mattingly, Bird’s second wife, the anonymity is likewise, in a sense, omnipresent.
As of now, Mattingly is more known as the wife of NBA Hall of Famer Larry Bird, but it turns out that she also played a little part in a few other significant events in Bird’s life, particularly those that involved his personal life.
Dinah Mattingly, sometimes known as Dinah Bird, was born in New York on November 16, 1954, and it appears that she is the daughter of an FBI agent. Nevertheless, according to certain other documents, she is from West Baden, Indiana.
Since college, Larry Bird has been dating Dinah, an Indiana native. The couple got hitched on October 31, 1989. While Mattingly and the NBA executive were traveling in the latter’s Ford Bronco, the latter proposed.
According to Glen Ankney, the former Boston Celtics player Bird wed Dinah on Saturday at noon in a small ceremony at the residence of Terre Haute industrialist Max Gibson.
The Larry Bird’s Boston Connection hotel-restaurant complex in Terre Haute was owned by Bird, Gibson, and Ankney. Only Bird, Mattingly, Gibson, and his wife Jackie, according to Ankney’s story at the time, attended the event.
Other than the bride and groom, only five other people attended the wedding. Son Connor and daughter Mariah were adopted by the couple after their wedding.
Dinah, who is reputedly five feet four inches tall, is also the stepmother to Corrie Bird, Bird’s daughter from his first marriage to Janet Condra. Bird and Dinah are still married to each other even though they have always shied away from the media and the public eye.
Bird and Dinah met When He Was Struggling
Dinah and Larry Bird met while students at Indiana State University. They happened to meet during a point in Bird’s life when things were very turbulent. The basketball player from West Baden committed suicide a year ago. His family was also having financial difficulties.
Additionally, Larry had recently divorced Janet Condra, a childhood pal. Immediately following Bird’s enrollment at Indiana State, they got married. Contrarily, Burd, and Condra got divorced in 1976. After a brief reconciliation and childbirth, the couple ultimately decided to call it quits on their marriage.
Even when Dinah and Bird were engaged, Bird’s circumstances weren’t ideal. He was playing for the Celtics at the time and having a successful season, but he had to wear protective eyewear due to a broken nose and a shattered bone under his left eye.
