Omar wed Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, but their request for a marriage license was turned down. In a religious ceremony, they got married. After having two children together, they got a traditional divorce in 2008.

She married British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi the following year, from whom she later sought a religious divorce in 2011.

She participated in the 2016 Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) primarily for the Minnesota House of Representatives and won. She became the first Somali-American legislator in the nation when her tenure officially started on January 3, 2017.

On June 5, 2018, she announced her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives from Minnesota.
