William Reece, a serial murderer, is still alive because he avoided being executed.
Beginning in the 1970s, a large number of young women and girls disappeared from southern Texas close to I-45; many of their remains were eventually found in a rural location known as the Texas Killing Fields.
Reece routinely made round trips in 1997 between his mother’s residence in Oklahoma and his new house in Texas. It took more than 20 years to bring charges against William Reece for the deaths of Laura Smither, Kelli Cox, Tiffany Johnston, and Jessica Cain.
In Texas, he was tried for the murders of Smither, Cain, and Cox after being extradited there in June 2022. William pleaded guilty and was handed three life sentences.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the death of William Reece was a fraud since he is still alive and will continue to serve a life term in jail. He is located in Livingston, Texas, near Polunsky, roughly an hour’s drive from the crime site.
Reece’s DNA was found to match that of a clothing belonging to Tiffany Johnston, a 19-year-old who had been murdered in Oklahoma in 1997, over two decades after his arrest, in 2015. The murder of Tiffany Johnston had occurred.
While still doing life for the attempted murder and abduction of Sapaugh, Reece was found guilty of Johnston’s homicide and handed the death sentence in August 2021. He avoided the death sentence, however, by helping officials find their remains, which were found scattered over two distinct dig sites.

The Allan B. Polunsky Unit, West Livingston, in Texas, where William Reece is being detained, is roughly a one-hour drive from the Texas Killing Fields.
Following his conviction for the murders of Smither, Cain, and Cox, authorities told KPRC 2 that they will “work out the details of when he may be sent back to Oklahoma,” since Reece had already been convicted of Johnston’s murder there.
Gay Smither, Laura Smither’s mother, told ABC13 that they were glad to see him return to face charges.
Jan Bynum, the mother of Kelli Cox, emphasized the need of officially documenting his guilt in Texas for not just Kelli but also Jessica and Laura. She said, “I don’t want Reece to be free so he can hurt others in the same way.”
