Sosa retreated from the public eye after retiring to build a global business empire. He had earned hundreds of millions of dollars playing baseball, which he put into several commercial endeavors.
Sosa refused to discuss his financial affairs in depth during a 2018 interview with Sports Illustrated, although he did provide the magazine with the following overview of his commercial interests:
He claims to have interests in his native Dominican Republic (oil), Panama (storm-resistant housing), the United Kingdom (beverages and hospitality), and the United Arab Emirates (real estate), even though he won’t give much verifiable information.
Sosa is so covert that his family is unaware of the specifics of his business transactions. Even with me, he is an extremely closed-off person, according to his son Sammy Sosa Jr.
“He means not to be. I have certain questions about my dad that I don’t know the answers to.”
Sammy and his wife Sonia Rodriguez have six kids together. The couple was married in 1992, and they did so again in 2004. He lives in the United Arab Emirates at the height of luxury.
Sammy Sosa has denied rumors that he wants to work for the Chicago Cubs, his former team. Sosa had his greatest playing years with the team, but he had little interest in staying. He said to Chicago’s NBC Sports:

Sosa dramatically lightened skin has drawn criticism, but he has remained defiant
Fans were astonished when Sammy Sosa returned to the public eye with skin that was noticeably lighter than it had been when he had retired. Although he had a dark complexion throughout his great baseball career, the native of the Dominican Republic who is also half Haitian now seems to be nearly white.
Memes mocking Sosa’s new appearance erupted on social media. Some people tried to relate to Sosa, but the majority found humor in it. Some even asserted that Sosa’s skin lightening was the result of doping. Sammy provided the following justification in a 2009 interview with Univision:
Sammy is occasionally asked questions regarding his skin tone, which forces him to respond to them. He responded to numerous tweets and memes about it in 2018. “Those individuals they sometimes criticize me, they don’t know me, they don’t put food on my table and they don’t pay my expenses,” he added to NBC Sports Chicago.
In his interview with Sports Illustrated, he reaffirmed that point. He cited one of the reasons why criticism doesn’t bother him as leading a luxurious lifestyle. Sosa said,
“Look at where I am today.”
I don’t take rubbish from anybody; this is my life. I act any way I choose. Sammy Jr. supported Sosa’s claims but conjectured that his father was hurting inside because of the criticism. Junior remarked, “I’m sure he feels a particular way, but it doesn’t impact him.
As in, “Man, I devoted so many years and so much hard work for you guys, and now you want to undermine all that because of some decisions I’m making – some personal decisions that don’t even remotely touch you?”
Sosa won’t get admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame unless he admits to drug use
Unfairly perhaps, drug accusations will always be associated with Sammy Sosa’s name. Sammy tested positive for using performance-enhancing substances in 2003. When Sosa testified before Congress in 2005, his lawyer challenged the evidence:
“Let me be quite clear: I have never used illicit performance-enhancing substances. I have never given myself or another person an injection. Neither the laws of the Dominican Republic nor those of the United States has been broken by me. I’ve lately had testing, in 2004, and I’m clean.
To his considerable detriment, Sammy has maintained ever since that he didn’t use drugs. He believed that being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame would be a formality following his retirement. His accomplishments warrant Hall of Famer status, but the doping issue seems to be an insurmountable barrier.
In 2022, Sosa will have his final chance to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. If the Baseball Writers’ Association of America does not vote for him with 75% of the vote, he will probably never be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Tom Ricketts, the team’s chairman, offered Sammy an easy opportunity to win back favor at Wrigley Field. Tom remarked during the 2018 Cubs Convention:
“I believe that we all need to show empathy and comprehend their circumstances. But I also think that those athletes owe us some candor, and I kind of think that the only way we can move past this is to put everything on the table.
