At a news conference on Wednesday, Beto O’Rourke questioned Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott about the devastating school massacre in Uvalde that claimed the lives of 19 kids and two teachers.

The former congressman used his position to push for tighter gun control laws, such as a required assault weapon buyback program, during the Democratic presidential primaries in 2020.
His interest in the subject was piqued in August 2019 by a racial massacre at an El Paso Walmart. In a Democratic debate the following month, he was unapologetic about the attitude, which sparked an immediate outcry from Republicans and went beyond the positions of the majority of his opponent’s primary challengers.

Throughout the comments from the audience and O’Rourke’s interruption, Abbott remained silent until addressing the audience, saying:
There are family members. Family members are crying as we speak. The hearts of family members have been broken. Someone screaming up here cannot accomplish anything with words.

Beto O’Rourke is a fourth-generation Texan raised in El Paso and has held positions as a city councilor, congressman, and small company owner. He started and is currently in charge of Powered by People, a nonprofit organization with roots in Texas that uses direct voter engagement and voter registration to advance democracy and produce Democratic victories.
The Democratic Party’s nominee for governor of Texas is Beto O’Rourke. On November 8, 2022, he will appear on the general election ballot.
On March 1, 2022, he won the Democratic primary. November 15, 2021, O’Rourke tweeted a video announcing his bid for governor of Texas. Since losing the 2018 Senate election, O’Rourke has made three additional runs.
