Wilson co-wrote ‘Reet Petite’ with Berry Gordy’s sister Gwen and writer-producer Billy Davis, which became a smash hit and reached the UK Top 10.
Gordy and Wilson worked together for the next two years, recording six more songs. He invested his songwriting earnings in production and borrowed $800 from his family to launch Tamla Records, an R&B record label. The label began producing records on January 12, 1959. The album ‘Bad Girl’ by The Miracles was not a commercial success. The Tamla and Motown labels merged in April 1960 to form the Motown Record Company, which signed Mary Wells as its second star.
Berry moved to Los Angeles in 1972 and released ‘Lady Sings the Blues,’ which was followed by ‘Mahogany’ in 1975 and ‘The Last Dragon’ in 1985. He sold his stake in Motown Records to MCA and Boston Ventures for $61 million on June 28, 1988. His autobiography, ‘To Be Loved,’ was published in 1994.
