How did Sauli Niinisto start his Professional Career?

From 1978 to 1988, Sauli Niinisto practiced law on his own in Salo. He entered politics afterward, serving on the Salo city council from 1977 to 1992, and in 1987 he was elected to the Finnish parliament as a member of the Finland Proper constituency.

After being chosen as the NCP’s party chairman in 1994, he was named Justice Minister in Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen’s first government in 1995. In 1996, he was named Finance Minister after serving as Deputy Prime Minister under the social democrat Lipponen.

He made history on January 1, 2002, by making the first-ever purchase in euros by a resident of Finland. But he declared his retirement from politics in 2001, and Ville Itala has since taken over as party leader.

He was appointed vice-chairman of the board of directors at the European Investment Bank in March 2005, and he ran for president in 2006. In the 2007 elections, he won 60,563 votes, a record in Finnish parliamentary elections and an increase of roughly 21% above Hertta Kuusinen’s record in 1948.

After losing to Halonen in the January 29, 2006 runoff election, he declared his candidacy for the 2007 parliamentary election. In 2002, while acting as Honorary President of the European People’s Party (EPP), he was influential in negotiations to incorporate the European Democrat Union (EDU) into the EPP. He was elected president of the Finnish Football Association on November 8, 2009.

In the 2012 presidential election, he ran again as the NCP’s candidate and won the first round, setting up a runoff against Green League nominee Haavisto, who ultimately won 37.0% of the vote. In the runoff, he received around 62.6% of the vote to Haavisto’s 37%.

Niinisto won with a larger margin than any other directly elected president in history. By declaring in May 2017 that he would seek reelection in the 2018 presidential election, Sauli became the first president of Finland to be elected in the first round of the popular vote. Sauli won the election with 62.7% of the vote.

Niinisto was questioned about his opinion of Putin following Russia’s attack on Ukraine on February 24th, 2022. “The masks have been torn off,” he said in response, “and the face of battle is all that’s left.”

At the July 16, 2018, US-Russia summit in Helsinki, he formally greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. He attended the 2018 UN General Assembly on September 25th in New York.

Furthermore, Russian President Putin ordered the Russian Armed Forces to invade Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Niinisto visited Washington, DC, for a single day on March 4, 2022, when he met with Vice President Joe Biden as well as several other US lawmakers and security personnel.

They came to the conclusion that US and Finnish relations, as well as security cooperation, should be strengthened.
