Colin Kaepernick adoptive parents were white. In his Netflix series Colin In Black and White, he discusses his upbringing. His experiences growing up as a mixed boy with white siblings and white parents are depicted in the television program. When Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality, he quickly gained international notoriety.
He was kicked out of the NFL, and despite some people’s support, he was nonetheless criticized. During the George Floyd demonstrations, Colin’s image in the eyes of the public altered as kneeling became a universal symbol against racism and police brutality.

On November 3, 1987, Colin Kaepernick was born to white lady Heidi Russo. African-American male with Ghanaian, Nigerian, and Ivorian ancestry, Kaepernick’s father. His identity is unclear because he and Heidi split up before Colin was born.
At the age of 19, broke, and alone to raise Colin, Heidi needed assistance. She chose to give him away to a financially secure family, had other children, and loved sports. The Kaepernicks were the ideal choice.
Colin Kaepernick has Refused to Meet his Birth Mother
Rick was a factory operations manager, and Teresa was a nurse. In addition to losing two sons, Lance and Kent, to heart problems, they also had two children, Kyle and Brown. Kaepernick was the ideal choice since they wanted a son. Teresa cited by ESPN
“I won’t forget that day ever. He was carried and placed on the ground in an infant carrier. There was also Russo’s birth mother. I glanced at her, and when she nodded, I just took him out of the carrier. As soon as I picked him up, I started crying. We embraced her tightly. She also required a few more minutes. Then we departed.
According to Rick, Colin’s adoption went as smoothly as they had hoped:
“I know adoptions aren’t always easy, but it was. Colin never had any problems with his adoption. The only distinction is that he has slightly darker skin than we do.
Heidi thought her only option was to let Colin go.
She told KDVR,
“I couldn’t move on with my life.”
Teresa kept Russo informed of Colin’s development by sending her letters and pictures. When the anguish became too much for her to bear, Heidi eventually urged Russo to stop.
Russo began a family and graduated as a registered nurse. Michael, Ethan, and Jett are the three sons she has. Heidi established the nonprofit organization Three Strands with two other ladies to assist birth mothers who choose adoption.
At the age of 18, Heidi wrote Colin a letter for him to read, but it didn’t influence his choice not to meet with her. He promised not to change his mind about not meeting Russo before the Super Bowl. He explained, “That’s simply my family. That’s it, then. Kaepernick continued by saying he has no interest in meeting Russo.
Colin has been pushed by the Kaepernicks to meet Heidi, but he won’t budge.
Colin Kaepernick’s birth Mother Criticized
Despite having white parents, Colin still faced discrimination because of the color of his skin. He told US Magazine,
“It only grew worse as I got older and taller.” No matter how close I was to my family, a frightened boss would approach me and say, “Excuse me. Is there anything I can do to assist you?
Before the commencement of American football, arguably the most American sport of all, Kaepernick decided to demonstrate against the national anthem, probably the greatest symbol of American pride.
Protests were coming from all directions, including Heidi Russo, Colin’s birth mother. There are methods to effect change without demeaning and disgracing the nation and family that gave you so many blessings, the tweeter wrote.
She later tweeted,
“The road less traveled doesn’t have to lead to ruin. Three months passed before Colin’s parents expressed their support for him. Initially, silent, Rick and Teresa were obliged to speak as stories surfaced that they disagreed with Colin’s behavior.”
They said the following:
As his parents, we find it upsetting to see tweets and articles that claim his family does not support him; nothing could be further from the truth. We want everyone to know how proud we are of our kid and how much we respect his fortitude and courage in bending down to defend the rights of others.
In their statement, Teresa and Rick attacked Kaepernick’s detractors. Additionally, it voiced disbelief at the “amount of racism out there!” The parents acknowledged that the fallout from Colin’s remarks had made them more aware of the awful “racial environment” in the USA. Teresa told The Undefeated, “I just want to be clear that we do support him completely.
Previously, Colin’s parents had backed him after a columnist had disparaged him for having tattoos. Teresa complained to USA Today:
“You classify this kid based on things like tattoos? Really? Are you going to describe this child in that way? Although it is quite annoying, it is what it is.
“This man is trying to make him appear like a gangster,” Rick said, “instead of mentioning that Colin does all these fantastic things and volunteers his time to children.”
