Apple TV+ released the official trailer for the film on November 16, 2022. The trailer gives a glimpse into the setting for the film. The stunning black-and-white images transport viewers to the late 1800s, capturing the spirit and tone of the era.

In the trailer, Will Smith’s character says:

“Thank you very much, God. “What can a guy do to me?” says the Lord.

The teaser depicts the horrifying reality of slavery briefly, with the protagonist desperately trying to break free from the bonds of poverty and enslavement in an oppressive environment. The three-minute trailer quickly touches on several key events in the film and establishes the core of the story without giving anything away.

The official synopsis of the film is as follows, according to Apple TV+ Press:

“Emancipation” depicts the inspiring story of Peter (Will Smith), a man who escapes slavery by relying on his wits, strong faith, and profound love for his family to avoid cold-blooded pursuers and the brutal Louisiana marshes on his journey to freedom.

The summary goes on to say:

“The video is based on photographs of “Whipped Peter” taken during a Union Army medical examination in 1863 and first published in Harper’s Weekly. One drawing, titled “The Scourged Back,” depicts Peter’s naked back being harmed by a beating inflicted by his enslavers, which eventually led to growing public opposition to slavery. Based on the description and trailer, fans can expect a riveting historical drama that addresses a variety of complex issues such as freedom, slavery, and humanity.
