The Brazilian-Monegasque millionaire Lily Safra passed away on July 9 at the age of 87. Lily Safra, the wife of financier Edmond Safra, passed away in Geneva on July 10 and will be laid to rest on July 11.
According to a spokesman of the Edmond J. Safra Foundation, she died after battling pancreatic cancer. 30 December 1934, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Lily Watkins was born to Wolf White Watkins, a Czechoslovak railway engineer, and Annita Noudelman de Castro. She was brought up in Rio de Janeiro.
At the age of 17, Lily Safra married Argentine hosiery magnate Mario Cohen. Claudio, Eduardo, and Adriana were the three children of the couple. Early in the 1960s, they divorced.
In 1965, Alfredo “Freddy” Monteverde, owner of the Brazilian appliance store chain Ponto Frio, remarried her. Carlos, their only child, was adopted.
Four years after their marriage in 1969, Monteverde died by suicide. According to historian Isabel Vincent, Lily’s late husband left her everything on his property.
Lily Safra married her fourth husband, Edmond Safra, in 1976
In 1976, Lily Watkins married Edmond Safra for the fourth time. A renowned Brazilian banker, he founded the Republic National Bank in New York. After World War II, the deceased banker’s family moved to Brazil.
Moise and Joseph Safra, the brothers of Edmond Safra, also managed banks in New York and Europe. The couple spends time in New York, Geneva, Monaco, and France.
According to the New York Post, they were each art collectors. Lily Safra reportedly paid $103.4 million for an Alberto Giacometti artwork, according to reports.
In 1999, Edmond perished in a strange fire in Monaco that was subsequently determined to be arson.
According to accounts, the deceased banker felt so safe at home that he “did not have his security detail accompany him to Monaco for the night.” His nurse, Ted Maher, was ultimately determined to have started the fire.
Michael Griffith, the defendant’s attorney, admitted that his client was responsible for the fire, but only to gain Edmond’s approval.
“It was the most stupid and insane thing a person could do. He did not intend to murder Mr. Safra. He simply desired that Mr. Safra value him more. Mr. Safra was his favorite individual. This was the best position he had ever held.”
According to Jewage, Edmond Safra left half of his assets to various charities and the other half to his family and wife, who collected an estimated $800 million. After Edmond’s passing, Lily Safra did not wed.
