Mary Peltola was elected as Alaska’s lone House member in a special election on August 31. She defeated former Republican governor Sarah Palin, who intended to return to politics. After ranked-choice votes were tabulated, Peltola won the seat, according to unofficial results given by the Alaska Division of Elections.
She will now serve the remainder of the term of the late Republican U.S. Representative Don Young, who held the office for nearly 50 years before passing away in March 2022.
Mary Peltola won by a narrow margin, according to NPR, with 91,206 votes to Sarah Palin’s 85,987. Peltola became the first Alaskan-born member of Congress due to her election.
She is also the first Democrat elected to Congress since the demise of former U.S. Rep. Nick Begich in 1972, who was succeeded by Young in 1973.

Mary Peltola, an Alaskan Yup’ik woman from Anchorage, is 48 years old. The University of Alaska and the University of Northern Colorado awarded her degrees.
She formed Sattler Strategies and managed community development and sustainability at Donlin Gold after leaving the state legislature.
She served as interim executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission and as Bethel, Alaska councilwoman from 2011 to 2013. From 1999 to 2009, she served in the Alaska House of Representatives.
In an interview with the Anchorage Daily News, Mary Peltola addressed how Congress should act to defend abortion rights and institutionalize Roe v. Wade. She made the following remarks while commenting on how to improve gun regulations in the United States:
“Secure storage legislation, fair waiting periods, and universal background checks might keep us all safer while protecting Second Amendment rights.”

CNN reports that Sarah Palin was dissatisfied with the August 31 election results and questioned the use of ranked-choice voting. She even described the technique as “complex and confusing.” Palin declared:
“Despite our displeasure with the outcome, Alaskans know I’m not one to back down. I’m going to reload instead. With the hope that Alaskans will learn from this voting system problem and correct it in the next election, let’s work even harder in November to send an America First conservative to Washington.”
Sarah Palin intended to return to politics 14 years after John McCain selected her for vice president of the Republican Party in 2008.
During her campaign for the House, she garnered national prominence and won the support of former U.S. President Donald Trump. In 2009, halfway through her term, she resigned from the governor’s office after losing the election.
