Scotland was a favorite setting for the Star Wars television series Andor’s on-location filming, according to the show’s creators.
Scenes for episode six, The Eye, were shot near Dalmally, Argyll, at the Cruachan hydroelectric project.
Production designer Luke Hull claimed that the renewable energy facility’s dam and underground power plant had provided the Disney series’ creators with the desired aesthetic.
“If you look at the dam, it resembles Darth Vader’s mask,” he continued.”
A 316m (1,037ft) long by 46m (15ft) wide dam is part of Cruachan, which was inaugurated in 1965.
Its power station, which lends the hydroelectric project its moniker, “Hollow Mountain,” is built inside a huge cavern excavated inside the mountain Ben Cruachan.
The 2016 Star Wars spin-off movie Rogue One has a prequel called Andor that centers on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor. In September, the first of its 12 episodes aired.
A highlight of on-location filming, according to Hull, who also worked on the HBO TV miniseries Chernobyl, was getting to the Cruachan Dam.
Hull claimed that the idea of building a planet among Scotland’s mountains had fascinated the production team.
He stated:
“It was intriguing to discover a real landscape that could represent a different kind of planet because so many of the Star Wars planets are made of ice or desert.”
After Disney used the website, Cruachan’s owners, Drax, made a number of charity contributions.
Funds were used to purchase a new truck for the Oban Mountain Rescue Team and to collaborate with community councils to establish a rural defibrillator network.
A contribution was made in support of St Conans Kirk’s ongoing preservation and renovation, a historic tourist destination in the Lochawe village of Argyll.
