Since his mother wed an American-born stepfather when she was pregnant with him, he spent his formative years in Los Angeles and was a citizen of the United States.
After his playing career was over, David stated in an interview that he did not want to continue playing football. When he was offered an assistant role at SV Darmstadt right after the season concluded, he came to understand that.
He desired to expand his horizons and learn new things. When he thought carefully about what he wanted, the notion of becoming a teacher, which he regarded as a stable job with lots of holidays and leisure time, occurred to him.
So, bearing that in mind, he attended college and graduated as a teacher of biology and sports. Since he was playing professional soccer, nobody was telling him what to do or what not to do, thus he appreciated his job. He took two to three years off from playing soccer and kept a safe distance.
But ultimately, he found his love for football again. He earned his degree and certification as a coach at the end of 2007. Since he already held a coaching qualification, he thought about going back to coaching.
David has been wed to his wife for a very long time. In Mainz, he first met the woman who would become his wife. Lea and Lynn, the couple’s adorable children, were born as a result of their marriage. He has had his wife and two kids at his side through all of his highs and lows. The couple marked their silver wedding anniversary in 2019.
His eldest child, Lea, works as a journalist and sportscaster. She is a sports presenter for SWR, a public regional broadcasting organization. David Wagner recently started working as a “Sportschau” presenter. She and Yannick, her boyfriend, are now dating. Now they reside in Stuttgart.
He and Klopp are close friends
Jurgen Klopp and David have been close friends for a very long time. Klopp is still David’s close friend even now he is the head coach of the elite Liverpool club. He still has a relationship with him. In both his professional and personal life, Klopp has played a vital and influential role.
He asserts that he has known Klopp for a longer period than he has his wife. They first ran into each other in Mainz, where David joined the team and Klopp switched from striker to defender. David credits Klopp with giving him all of his football knowledge. The second of Klopp’s daughters is named Lynn in his honor.

David enjoyed a distinguished playing career. He achieved his greatest success when playing for Mainz for four years, scoring 19 goals.
For eight years, he was a part of the American national team. Before taking the helm at Young Boys, he served as head coach of Borussia Dortmund II, Huddersfield Town, and Schalke 04. In his four seasons as manager, he led Huddersfield Town to the Premier League and the EFL Championship Play-Offs. As of December 2022, his net worth is between $2 and $5 million.
